Guide Review - Book Review: ACE the IT Resume

My favorite things about this book are the many samples of not only resumes, but cover letters, power words, and job titles. Many times, just seeing good examples will get you on the right track. I also like the way that many levels of experience and many difficult situations are handled. Paula covers resumes for the newly certified, recent college grad, career changers, those with gaps in experience, those with a huge number of jobs, and more. All of these situations arise at some point in a career and Paula shows how all can be handled gracefully on a resume.

I would like to see just a bit more on how to handle networking and resume posting online. There is good information on keywords, scanability and converting to ASCII, but this chapter is short and could be expanded to include more in depth strategies for getting noticed online. For example, is it better to cut and past your well-crafted paper resume or just load the fields with keywords?

For those of us with certifications, there are several examples and descriptions of how to include certifications and balance them with experience. Overall, I have to say that this is a really useful book. It is targeted, well-written and provides lots of resume writing tips and tricks. I certainly plan to use it the next time I update my resume!
