Microsoft Internet Information Server.
What is Microsoft IIS?
Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) is a Web and application server for the Internet and private intranets. IIS receives requests from users on the network using the World Wide Web (WWW) service and transmits information using the Hypertext Transport Protocol (HTTP). IIS uses Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS) to provide security, performance, and scalability with server side packages.

What is CGI?
The Common Gateway Interface (CGI) specification is used for creating executable programs that run on a Web server. CGI defines the communication link between a Web server and Web applications. It gives a network or Internet resource access to specific programs. For example, when users submit an HTML form on a Web site, CGI is used to pass this information to a remote application for processing, and retrieve the results from the application. It then returns these results to the user by means of an HTML page.

User based access.
What is Windows Explorer?
Windows Explorer is a dual-pane window that can be used for file management. File management includes copying, moving, renaming, and searching files and folders. Windows Explorer displays the resources on the system and the tools available in the operating system in a hierarchical form, in its left window-pane. It displays the contents of the folder that is selected in the left window-pane, in its right window-pane. Windows Explorer can also be used for starting programs or accessing system resources such as a printer.
It can be accessed in Windows through the Start menu as follows:
Start>Programs>Accessories>Windows Explorer

What is Server Manager?
Server Manager is a remote administration functionality tool. It is used to stop and start services on remote servers, and to view all connections to a server. This helps in maintaining user connection to a server.

What is finger command?
The finger command is used in Unix systems. Basically, this command is used to find out whether or not a user is logged on to a specific computer. Depending upon the version of Unix being used, more detailed information about a user can also be obtained through this command. This command can also be used for reading the contents of a user's .plan and .project files (if these exist with appropriate permissions).

Perl configuration and additional services.

Management of news servers.

Performance Analysis

Server and service log analysis.
What is MMC?
Microsoft Management Console (MMC) is a Windows utility designed to manage servers and services through a common user interface. It provides a common environment for hosting administrative tools called consoles. MMC enables administrators to view computer activities. It can be used to create a set of integrated tools each of which performs a specific task.

System performance evaluation.
What is Performance Monitor?
Performance Monitor is used to get statistical information about the hardware and software components of a server. Performance Monitor is used for the following:

  • Monitor objects on multiple computers.
  • Log data pertaining to objects on multiple computers, over time.
  • Analyze the effects of changes made to a computer.
  • Launch programs and send notifications when thresholds are reached.
  • Export data for analysis in spreadsheet or database applications.
  • Save counter and object settings for repeated use.
  • Create reports for use in analyzing performance, over time.
Note: The Log view of the Performance Monitor is able to track events historically for later review. The Alert, View, and Chart views are real time views that show the current data or alert messages.

What is %Processor Time?
The %Processor Time counter is used to monitor processor statistics of a computer. This counter reports the percentage of time the processor is busy. A bottleneck in the processor occurs, when the value of this counter exceeds 80%. To overcome this, either the processor should be upgraded or another processor should be added. Moving some applications to another server can also resolve the issue.
