70-271 Study Tip - What is a counter?

From uCertify.com, for About.com

A counter is a particular aspect of an object that can be measured by the Performance tool. It is one of the administrative tools provided by the Windows XP operating system. An object represents a major component of a computer or operating system, i.e., the physical disk, memory, disk time, processor, etc. By default, the Performance tool displays counters related to three objects: Memory, Physical Disk, and Processor. They are Pages/sec, Avg. Disk Queue Length, and %Processor Time. They help in representing the basic aspects of a computer's performance. If a user wants to add more counters in the Performance tool, he can do so by configuring the Add Counters dialog box. A user can open this dialog box by right-clicking the Performance tool and selecting Add Counters.
