70-271 Study Tip - What are NTFS standard folder permissions

Permissions that can be used only on NTFS-formatted partitions or volumes are commonly called NTFS permissions. NTFS permissions provide more options than share permissions and allow users to control the access to files, folders, or applications. Like share permissions, these permissions are also assigned by selecting Allow or Deny. NTFS permissions are applied when a user is accessing files or folders over the network.

NTFS permissions are applicable to files and folders. Following are the six basic NTFS folder permissions:

Read: This permission allows a user to view files or folders.

Write: This permission allows users to create files and folders and to write data to files and subfolders.

List Folder Contents: This permission allows users to traverse folders, execute files, and view files and subfolders.

Read and Execute: This permission allows users to traverse folders, view files and subfolders, and execute files.

Modify: This permission allows users to traverse folders, view files and subfolders, execute files, create files, write data, create folders, and append data.

Full Control: This permission allows a user or group to change permissions on the folder, take ownership of it, and perform all activities included in all other permissions.
